1999 Ducati ST4 916 SPORT TOURING
This is an unbelievably clean Ducati ST4. Featuring the 916cc Desmoquattro supersport engine, this sport-touring machine is certainly on the fun side of this class of bikes. Compared to the 916 Supersport, this bike has very comfortable handlebars and foot pegs with better geometry which allow you to sit a bit more upright - far better for rides over an hour. Also, the Ducati factory locking hard-luggage is an amazing setup - big enough to fit a full-face helmet inside but still look really sharp on the bike.
Other amazing features these bikes come with from the factory are the Brembo brake masters/calipers/rotors, Brembo hydraulic clutch, Brembo wheels, inverted Showa USD cartridge forks.
This particular bike is a superbly maintained and complete example. Yes, it has 41k miles on it, but it looks like is has 4k - always stored indoors under a cover, even when on trips. The cycle has had two owners. The original owner was a dentist in Michigan who didn't ride often, accumulating 13k miles by 2007. During his ownership, the bike was completely stock and always dealer-maintained. The second owner - Steve - was a meticulous railroad industry technician by trade who immediately went to work customizing the cycle with the help of Ducati of Milwaukee to service and tastefully improve the cycle with no-expenses spared. His plan for the bike was to accomplish a 5,000 mile round-trip journey from Wisconsin to California - he ended up doing this trip 4 times during his ownership of the ST4, and he is now enjoying a Multistrada.
The cycle has a vast number of changes and tweaks to set it apart as an excellent machine. The exhaust is from "Sta-in-Tune" out of Australia, and is a true stainless full system which sounds the way a real Desmo should - it also has removable restrictors to help you pass vehicle inspection days. This setup looks and sounds amazing, especially being mated with a high-flow air filter and an ECU fuel EEPROM chip tune. The open kit for the dry clutch is an anodized aluminum setup from Speedymoto along with their crankshaft inspection cover on the left side. The clutch itself has been upgraded to a performance kit from Barnett which feels great without being grabby like factory ones can be at times. The clutch slave from STM makes the clutch lever feel creamy smooth. Clutch slaves are a common failure-point for Ducati and Aprilia cycles from this timeframe so keep that in mind while shopping.
The Zero-Gravity windscreen at the front is excellent at eliminating wind buffeting on the freeway, while also completing the glossy black look of the bike. Carbon fiber replacements for the tank cover and rear fender/chain guard really help accent the bike nicely. Other sweet touches are the anodized aluminum fairing fastener kit, anodized master cylinder covers, gel handlebar grips, weighted bar ends to reduce vibration, gold tinted drive chain, custom upholstered seat with red panel and red stitching, ram-mount ball on the triple clamp for GPS/phone, battery tender lead, and a rear tail tidy kit.
Over the years Steve had all big service work done at the Ducati shop in Milwaukee, and kept every maintenance part removed from the bike along the way (save for plugs, filters, and brake pads). The original parts which have been replaced are included with the sale as proof of the religious maintenance this cycle has received, along with every receipt, service note, and other documents recording the loving time this bike has spent on the road and at certified Corse shops as needed.
The parts box that goes with the bike includes about a dozen timing belts, an OEM stator, all hoses for coolant/fuel/vacuum, battery cables, complete original clutch assembly with basket & covers, original tail parts removed by the tail tidy, cam belt pulley bearings, wheel bearings, head bearings, axel adjusters, starter solenoid, throttle position sensor, complete OEM wiring harness, and many baggies from little goodies over the years.
In preparation for the sale here at the dealership we have replaced the timing belts, checked the valve clearances, new battery, changed the engine coolant, spark plugs, engine oil & filter with a new K&N, and in general checked over the cycle to ensure its roadworthiness.
Also included are the original owner's manual, both ignition keys (1999 is not a red-key year for Ducati), a bunch of saddlebag keys with covers, and a Ducati branded wheel lock under the seat.
It should also go without saying that the tires, brakes, electrical etc. are all in good order as well.
This bike has received a full inspection with a test drive.
